Sonnet 147 is a wonderful sonnet by the famous English writer/poet/playwright William Shakespeare. It is one of his 154 Sonnets, specifically the Dark Lady Sonnets (127-152) which describe the speaker falling in love with a lady who is evil and dark in nature. In this particular sonnet, Shakespeare compares his love for her to an illness that he cannot cure, and slowly goes insane as a result. Towards the end, he resolves that she is truly evil, even though he firmly believed otherwise. After discovering this sonnet, I decided to set it to music for a competition specifically geared towards setting Shakespeare poetry to music, however the piece is far grander and more difficult than what they were looking for. My goal was to use the four themes I present in the beginning as the only melodic material throughout the piece, and watch as these 4 themes develop and get used in a variety of ways, musically setting the text.
