In my junior year of high school, I was experimenting with incredibly dark textures in music. I wrote a lot of really slow and dark music at this time - not because I was dark on the inside or that I was going through something, but because I found it really easy to write music in this style. Black is one of these pieces where I experimented heavily, with really chromatic harmonies and lots of scoring in very low registers. It is written in an ABABA format, which I feel adds to the darkness because the A sections are dark and the B sections are lighter and more hopeful. I was not trying to write practically, so this piece is very unpractical and has players playing only a few notes in the whole piece, however the dark story was able to come across better as a result.
