I love Holst, especially his military band works. I always felt that his first suite in Eb really captured the stylistic trends of wind band writing at the time it was conceived, and so for this work I really wanted to capture the trends that I see currently in wind ensemble writing. While this was the starting point, I believe that as the piece progressed it became more about my own personal writing styles than those of everyone else around me. Nowadays there are so many different thoughts and opinions about wind ensemble music that it becomes impossible to track each individual one, and so I decided to create a perfect example of my own compositional voice within this three movement work. The first is a large fanfare that takes us all over the place, the second is a love song with a bit of a twist, and the third is a massive celebration.
