First Love is a wonderful poem by John Clare that really captures the feelings of seeing a beautiful girl for the first time and immediately falling in love. It is so romantic and so otherworldly in expression that I felt I must set it to music. I definitely feel as if this work is my most romantic piece of music - the singing melodies really bring the feelings of the text to light, along with growing lush harmonies. The 6/8 meter helps to give it a waltz-like feel, as if you are slowly dancing as you are dreaming of this beautiful girl. Certainly not easy for both the choir or the piano, but if done well I guarantee your audience will be falling in love once again.
