Solitude was written after a fairly difficult time in my life. The piece musically portrays me in my bedroom alone after certain events took place, and my thoughts and emotions at the time. The beginning and ending sections outline the central idea of the piece - dreamy ignorance. I use the Tristan chord quite a bit in this piece to signify this dreamy ignorance, and to take us through music without a tonic key center. It starts fairly high-pitched, with dreamy atmospheric slow sounds that build to a low-pitched, loud climax. The music seems to repeat the questions I had in mind at the time - What is going on? Why is this happening? Will it ever be ok again? The middle section goes all over the place, from rage to jealousy and even to a happy fun dance-like feeling as I am remembering the happiness I felt before. This section feels a little disorganized and it shifts through moods pretty quickly, so as to mimic my train of thought at the time. This morphs back into the dreamy ignorance at the end, asking those same questions I asked in the beginning. The last chord has a flicker of hope for better days ahead, and I must say that hope was not false - I am living a much better life now than I did at that point, and I hope that anyone else that is going through something will find the light as well.
