with this piece, I originally set out to try and see what I could do with the one theme presented
in the beginning. What came, however, was not a large theme and variations – rather, a story, from
which we see the slightly dark and somber opening, the fast-paced and eerie middle section, then back
full circle to the dark closing, which brings a sense of conclusion to the piece. The title, Contrary for
Entreaty, is inspired from the story I present, with the contrast between the sections and the slight
warlike feeling present in the middle section. While the theme goes to very different places, the main
focus instead should be how the piece progresses, and the story the piece creates as it unfolds.
